Taking a stand in the fight against global climate change.
In December 2009, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark to negotiate a new global treaty on cutting carbon emissions.  Currently the proposals being discussed do not meet the criteria of reducing the global concentration of CO2 to 350 ppm.   The International Day of Climate Action is a grassroots movement to involve people all over the world in drawing government and media attention to the issue.

Our event will live on, and bloom in the spring as a reminder that the need for action is not limited to one day . . .  but continues until we succeed in restoring a sustainable environment on our planet . . .  the only earth we have.

WHY 350 Daffodils?   The concept of the International Day of Climate Action is to draw attention to the number 350.   Most of the actions around the world in some way highlight the number 350.  Here in Meriden, where we are known for our annual "Daffodil Festival" every April in Meriden's beautiful and historic Hubbard Park, it seemed to us that 350 daffodils, arranged to spell out "350.ORG" was appropriate.
October 24th 2009  -  Members and friends of the Unitarian Universalist Church participated in the International Day of Climate Action to draw awareness to the issue of global warming and highlight the importance of reducing the concentration of CO2 in the earth's atmosphere below 350 ppm, which climatologists consider a safe sustainable level.   The current CO2 concentration is approximately 387 ppm.
Joining thousands of other actions all over the globe, we chose to highlight the number "350" by planting 350 daffodil bulbs to spell out "350.org" on the lawn of our sanctuary on Paddock Avenue in Meriden.
Mother Nature, in an understandably cooperative gesture, held off the heavy rain and high winds forecast for southern New England long enough for us to complete our work, and then helped out our efforts by generously watering in our newly planted bulbs.
In the picture above the ground is ready for planting and the "350" portion of the figure is outlined with lime.  Lots of folks showed up to help out, despite the damp and chilly conditions.  Even some of our youngest members enthusiastically got in to the act!
